The central government has rejected the claims that 500 currency notes will be phased out by March 2026. On Tuesday, the Press Information Bureau (PIB) released a fact on social media, which made it clear that the viral news was fake. This confirmed that 500 rupee notes remain legal tenders and advised people not to fall for such misinformation. Citizens were also requested to verify any such claims through official sources before believing or sharing.After a YouTube channel named Capital TV, it was clarified that the government is planning to shut down a 500 rupee note by 2026. The video created confusion and nervousness among the public.According to the Economic Times, speculation may intensify after the release of a circular by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in April 2025. The circular asked banks and white label ATM operators (WLAO) to increase the availability of Rs 100 and 200 rupee notes in the ATM. The Press Information Bureau is actively working to combat the misinformation related to the government. In November 2019, it established a dedicated fact check unit (FCU) to address the increasing proliferation of fake news. Citizens can report suspicious claims through WhatsApp, email or official web portal.
