‘The limit was raised to accommodate MS Dhoni …’: Sunil Gavaskar requested a cap on the salary of unaccounted player in IPL

New Delhi: Cricket veteran Sunil Gavaskar has criticized the Control Board (BCCI) for Cricket in India to change his rules before the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) season to adjust his rules. In his column in Sportstar, Gavaskar raised an alarm on the increasing salary of uncapricated players, taking care that such steps can harm the future of Indian cricket.
The BCCI revived a rule – scattered in 2021 – which allows an Indian player who has not played international cricket in five years, which is considered “unaccounted”. This enabled Dhoni to maintain Chennai Super Kings for Rs 4 crore under the unkapped player category.

Gavaskar said, “To accommodate Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who had become an uncontempted player before the auction last year, Seema was increased to Rs 4 crore,” Gavaskar said, the move called the move a disappointing example of the facility on merit.

He also questioned the value of splashing unpublished talents. He wrote, “Many of the players purchased in large quantities are busy because their hunger and drive are satisfied … Indian cricket beats a little at the loss of any player whether he has been successful or not,” he wrote.

Gavaskar said, “In all these years, it is difficult to recall a large number of unaccounted players who have justified their inclusion in the team.”
Gavaskar urged the BCCI to reverse the change of rules and limit salary for unaccounted players to protect the long -term interests of Indian cricket.
