Gunmen killed three in south -east of Nigeria: Police

Police on Saturday blocked a highway in the south -east IMO state of Nigeria, killing at least three people and injured several, police said on Saturday.IMO State Police spokesman Henry Ocoy told AFP that on Thursday around 5:00 AM (0400 GMT) “Criminal elements suspect being a member of the accused IPOB … Their number came out... and blocked the Overi-Okigway highway and started setting fire sporadically ”.He said the gunmen “firing on the passengers on the road and they were able to install some vehicles and killed some innocent persons”.“Three persons have been confirmed dead for now,” he said.Amnesty International reported in a post of 30 on X a toll. The police called that “sensational”.Ocoy said that the gunmen were engaged in a fight with the police and one suspect was killed while the other was arrested.These are “crooks who are seduced under the umbrella of freedom fight, reduce all kinds of intoxication acts, including insensitive murder. They are only pure terrorists.”The attack took place on the same day when President said that IMO’s neighboring ANAMBRA was visiting the state to launch the Tinubu Infrastructure Project.Police convicted the attack on indigenous people of Biafra (IPOB), a group that wants freedom for Igbo people in South -East Nigeria.Former London estate agent and founder of IPOB, Namadi Kanu is on a test of terrorism allegations in the capital Abuja.
