‘Leadership is about character’: R Ashwin cites the Australian method for the selection of captain. Cricket news

Indian cricket will enter an indefinite new era next week when the selectors named a test squad without the great Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma of all time for the first time in more than a decade.Batting Great Kohli and Captain Rohit both retired from tests in the last week. The retirement of veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin last year left India without the backbone of the side, which was the number one in the world testing rankings in the past.Timesofindia.com has previously reported that top-order batsman Shubman Gill has been given the task of starting India’s reconstruction with a five-observer England series, which starts from Headingley on 20 June.Amidst all this speculation, Ashwin has stated that “leadership is about all character” and he has cited the Australian method of choosing a captain.
“The Australian way is that the captain should have a certainty in the first XI,” Ashwin said on his Youtube channel “Ash Ki Baat”.“In Australia, a captain has to give a presentation. They choose two or three candidates and ask them to present their case. What is your vision?“They ask such questions before selecting the captain.
“You have to understand that a captain, a coach, and a selector can make or break a career. It has happened in the past, and it will be in the future because the captain will be the one who takes the player to the park. He has a huge responsibility on him.“For that, you need an interview to choose the right person for the job.Who is that IPL player?“No selector, no captain, no coach has an internal knowledge of the character of a player. I believe that it is Rishabh Pant, Shubman Gill, Jaspreet Bumrah, or Ravindra Jadeja, you cannot decide who is the leadership material and who is not unless you have asked that person.“I know that it’s not going to happen. I don’t know if Australia runs this process to take its captain,” he said.
