‘Jaspreet Bumrah does not want to make Bumrah captain’: Ravi Shastri Drops Bomb Cricket News

New Delhi: Former India cricketer and former coach Ravi Shastri has advocated a further viewing viewing in selecting India’s next Test captain after Rohit Sharma’s retirement from the draft. Rohit recently stepped away from Test cricket, but confirmed that he would continue to play in the ODI match. He first retired from T20 International after India’s leadership for the 2024 T20 World Cup title in the West Indies.Speaking on the ICC review, Shastri shared his view on the ongoing discussion around the vacant test captaincy. In a conversation with hosts Sanjana Ganesan, Shastri emphasized the need for a future-oriented mentality and advised India’s Pace Spierhead Jasprit Bumrah with leadership duties.Shastri said, “Look for me, Jaspreet would have been a clear option after Australia.”“But I don’t want Jasprit to be made captain and then you lose him as a bowler.”Shastri exposed Bumrah’s recent battle with a back injury that he continued during the final border-Gavaskar Trophy match in Sydney. The injury sidelined her in January to early April for nearly three months, forcing her to the Miss India’s winning ICC Champions Trophy 2025 campaign.“I think he (Bumrah) has to take a game to his body at one time. He is now coming back after a serious injury,” said Shastri.“He must have played IPL cricket, which is four overs cricket. Now 10 overs, 15 overs bowling will be tested.
Instead of putting additional responsibility on Bumrah, Shastri supported Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant as suitable candidates for the captaincy of the test, emphasizing the importance of age and longevity.Shastri said, “You prepare someone and I would say that Shubman looks great.“There is also Rishabh. I think both of these are clear that I am looking due to their age and they have a decade ahead. So, let them learn.”Shastri also reported that the team should look forward to the team, while stepping away from the recent test format with Rohit and Virat Kohli, furthering the matter for the gill or pants. Both players come with leadership experience, their IPL franchise – Gill captained pants with Gujarat Titans and Delhi capitals.Shastri said, “He has got experience as a captain, now, he is captaining his franchise and it makes a difference.”“What I have seen a little looks very interesting. Rachit, calm, he has all the qualities,” Shastri said, praising the nature of the top ranked batsman in the ICC ODI player rankings.Addressing concerns about Gill’s performance abroad, Shastri dismissed the criticism outright.
“You guys will talk that he is not scoring runs abroad. You know, this topic always comes, not scored abroad,” he said.“Sometimes I tell them, go and see your own record, how much work you have done abroad? Abroad, abroad, let him play, let him play a run abroad, then he will score a run. He is a class player.”Gill, who has already served as the Vice-Capture of India, also captained the national side in the T20I series in Zimbabwe. India won the series 4–1, with Gill scored 170 runs in five innings at a strike rate of 125.92, including the highest score of 66 in the third T20I-India won by 23 runs.Shastri said, “There is a decade of cricket ahead of him for the country.”“And I am sure he will create a rift in one of the tourism, he will make for all the runs he has not received before.”
