Case of gold smuggling: Ranya Rao’s mother is in custody in custody in Karnataka High Court

Ranya Rao was arrested in a high-profile Gold smuggling case in March. Now, his mother has contacted Karnataka High Court Demanding relief from a preventive preventive order issued under the prevention of strict conservation of foreign currency and prevention of smuggling activities (COFEPOSA). HP Rohini filed a captive corpus petition on Thursday, requesting the court to announce that any of his daughter’s custody under Cofepoa would be legally unstable.Ranya Rao was detained on March 3, 2025 Revenue Wisdom Directorate (DRI) Officers seized 14.2 kg of gold bars worth about Rs 12.56 crore from its possession at the Kemp Gowda International Airport in Bengaluru. Officials allege that Rao tried to remove the total duties of Rs 4.83 crore by tapping his body using strips. The Finance Ministry issued a detention order on 22 April through its Central Economic Intelligence Bureau, working at a request to DRI. This COFEPOSA order, if implemented, allows the authorities to detain Rao and his co-accused for one year without regular judicial proceedings, even though bail has been granted in other cases.According to a report by Hindustan Times, the case was heard by a holiday bench of Justices HP Sandesh and Ramchandra Hoodar, the Center expected to register its response when the matter resumed on June 3. Meanwhile, the Karnataka High Court first issued a notice to the DRI about Rao’s bail application, which was eventually re -presented. Rao, who is also the half -daughter of Karnataka Director General of Police, Ramchandra Rao, is in judicial custody with his alleged team Telugu actor Tarun Konduru Raju, whose bail argument was also denied. DRI said the two actors were together in the United Arab Emirates, but when Raju returned to Hyderabad, Rao landed in Bangalore, where smuggling was detected.After Rao’s arrest, two other individuals-Tarun Raju and Jeweler Sahil Jain took into custody in connection with the case. The three accused are in judicial custody, their remand many times. The Bengaluru session court recently denied Bail to Tarun Raju, which dismissed its petition filed under the Indian Municipal Security Code (BNSS), 2023.
