New Delhi: India on Wednesday welcomed the signing of a treaty between the United Kingdom and the Republic of Mauritius on the return of Mauritius sovereignty on the Chagos Islands including Diego Garcia. In a press statement by the Ministry of External Affairs (Mea), India described the agreement as a milestone achievement and a positive development for the region. “We welcome the signing of the treaty between the United Kingdom and the Republic of Mauritius on the return of Mauritius sovereignty on the Chagos Islands including Diego Garcia. The statement stated that the understanding between the two sides who arrived in October 2024 are ahead, and marks the culmination of the process of disintegration of Mauritius in the spirit of international law and regulations-based orders, “the statement states.India has consistently supported Mauritius’ legitimate claim on the Chagos Islands, repeating its position on decolonization, sovereignty and regional integrity. The statement said, “India has consistently supported the legitimate claim of Mauritius on the Chagos Islands, which is keeping in mind its royal status, respect for sovereignty and regional integrity of nations.As a firm and long -standing partner of Mauritius, India is committed to working with Mauritius and other similar -ideological countries to strengthen marine security and regional stability and ensure peace and prosperity in the Indian Ocean region. ,Earlier in March, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri confirmed India’s support for Mauritius on the issue of Chagos sovereignty, stating, “We have supported Mauritius in its stance on their sovereignty on Chagos. And it is clearly in relation to sovereignty and support for the sovereignty of our other countries.“Misri insisted that India had contributed adequately to Mauritius’ maritime security and security, and highlighted the ongoing technical and development cooperation.During Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s previous visit to Mauritius, several agreements were signed to increase maritime security, technical cooperation, ocean observation and capacity building. India has provided ships and assistance for marine monitoring, and supports many projects from infrastructure to education, health and blue economy. “These facilities are assisting Mauritius under their maritime surveillance and patrolling its vast exclusive economic sector and protecting their blue economy from traditional and non-traditional maritime challenges.”India confirmed their commitment to deepen their partnership with Mauritius and contribute to the peace and prosperity of the Indian Ocean region, in line with the support for international law and decolonization.
