South Africa Test Captain Temba Bavuma, the first black cricketer to lead his country in Test cricket, shared his journey by playing cricket on Langa streets to lead his team at Lord’s in the upcoming ICC World Test Championship Final against Australia on 11 June. South Africa last faced Australia in a test series in 2022-23, where Australia won 2–0.Now 35 -year -old Bavuma recalled his childhood connection to Lord’s Cricket Ground, drawing similarities between the streets of his hometown and famous cricket places.“When we were growing up in Langa, Lord always had some kind of loyalty. Tar on the right side of the road was not done so well and we used to call it Karachi. On the other side there was MCG. But my favorite section was clean and done well, and we called it Lord because it just looked better. As a child of 10, I already had a dream of playing at Lord’s, “Bavuma told The Guardian.His journey included a scholarship for SACS, where he faced mainly challenges from the white institution.“It was hard integrated within the system, learning and understanding (white) culture,” he said about his time in SACS. “But I had to learn about discipline and etiquette. I also had to learn confidence. Can you imagine moving a child from a township to a system, where, originally, everything is there? Always there was doubt. Have I enough to come here?”

Bavuma then remembered the clear differences to the Sack played against Langa. “Langa’s friends will have very big plates in lunch. We will laugh about it but … Lunga boy must be thinking when he will get another chance to eat that way?”After going to Johannesburg and participating in St. David, his cricket career moved forward, which has since named his cricket ground.Bavuma achieved an important milestone in 2016, which became the first black South African for a test century.
