After almost 2 years diplomatic enmity over the killing of Khalistan separatist, India and Canada took the first step towards restoration of general condition in relations as PM Narendra Modi and his Canadian counterpart Mark Carney agreed to resume the initial return and stalled trade talks of the High Commissioners.In a bilateral meeting on the marginalized of the G7 Summit, the leaders outlined mutual respect for concerns and sensitivity, people’s links and economic supplements as a balanced relationship.
India described a 40-minute meeting with Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri as positive and creative, stating that the leaders agreed to take calibrated steps to restore stability, committed to resume senior level business talks, and in the domain to rebuild the trust.It is understood that India and Canada discussed their respective security concerns, such as India needs to work against anti -India elements. He said that he agreed to work to his concerned authorities to work further in this regard. Canada took out the talks in 2023 amidst tense relations. There was no mention of business talks in Ottawa’s readout, but said that the leaders discussed important commercial links – including participation in economic development, supply chains and energy change. Under Trudeau, Canada “expelled” Indian High Commissioner Sanjay Verma and several other Indian diplomats last year, forcing India to take similar action. India, however, retained that it was Trudeau and their vote-bank politics which was responsible for ruining the relationship. Both sides have already identified senior diplomats for the job of the High Commissioner, and they are expected to take their work soon. As the Canadian readout said, it will ensure the return of regular services for citizens and businesses in both countries. The Indian statement said that the leaders underlined the relationship between the deep people between the two countries and agreed to take advantage of this living bridge for the benefit of the two countries, ” Modi and Canada confirmed their common interest in promoting an independent and open Indo-Pacific. Misri stated that the leaders committed to start discussion on connectivity, people-to-people relations, and detected cooperation in clean energy, digital infrastructure, artificial intelligence, food security and significant mineral supply chains.
