New Delhi: All central government employees covered under the Integrated Pension Scheme (UPS) will get retirement and death gratuity benefits as the old pension scheme (OPS), Union Minister of State for Personnel Jitendra Singh said on Wednesday.By incorporating death-cum-retirement gratuity in the UPS, a large pending demand of a large part of central government employees is expected to be encouraged to be encouraged under the National Pension System (NPS). Singh, who was addressing a press conference in Delhi on the “transformative” visit of the Ministry of Public Complaints and Pension in the last 11 years, said that the payment given under UPS reflects the government’s commitment to ensure social security for all categories of employees under NPS “.The Financial Services Department notices UPS on 24 January 2025, with the objective of providing a guaranteed pension similar to OPS, but with the contribution model, with the objective of providing the central government employees under NPS. Employees covered under NPS can switch to UPS ensuring comprehensive pension coverage. This scheme guarantees 50 percent pension amount of average basic salary earned in 12 months before retirement for people with at least 25 years of service. Additionally, employees with minimum 10 years of service are entitled to a minimum pension of Rs 10,000 per month on supernation.In the event of a pensioner’s death, his family will receive 60 percent of the final pension. Employees contribute 10% of their basic salary and DA, while the government contributes 18.5 percent, which is more than 14 percent of the NP. An order issued by Pension and Pensioners Welfare (DOPPW) on Wednesday made it clear that central government employees covered under UPS will also be eligible for the benefit of retirement gratuity and death gratuity under the provisions of the Central Civil Services (Payment of Gratuity under the National Pension System). A second order specified option under OPS to avail benefits under OPS, on the death of a government servant, during service or from service due to invalid or disability.Doppw Secretary V Srinivas said, “The order gives the option to return the OP in the case of death in service. It is progressive in nature and addresses the clarification being sought by the employees,” DOPW Secretary V Srinivas said, “UPS pensioners will also be eligible for Rs 25 lakh.”The PTI said that the chairman of Manjit Singh Patel, President of All India NPS Employees Federation, said that all the misconceptions of employees would be removed by incorporating death-co-feature gratuity in UPS and encouraged to choose UPS option.In the case of the death of a government servant while in service, the final option will be used by the deceased employee before his death, and the family will have no right to modify the option.
