New Delhi: During the Emergency of 1975-77, a new book on the secret operation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which included a courageous visit to the jail in Bhavanagar, was disguised to meet activists who were a ‘Swamiji’.Published by the title “The Emergency Diaries – Years That Late Late” and Bloquraft, the underground work of the book Chronicles Modi has been published as a young RSS practitioner. To find out under a government ban on RSS, Modi adopted various disguises-most often helped run an emergency campaign through a solid Sikh identity-and secret meetings, family support drives and literature distribution. The book states, “He not only ensured regular publication of anti-earrgency literature, but also took dangerous responsibility to distribute it in the whole of Gujarat.” ,One of the standout events comes from a journalist Vishnu Pandya, who remembers that in September 1976, Modi disguised as a spiritual leader in Bhawanagar Jail. Pandya said, “He stayed with us for about an hour. We further promoted the jail administration, the families of the prisoners, and the literature moving forward. No one doubted that it was not Modi.”PM Modi also proposed innovative strategy – such as hiding pamphlets in barber shops and distributing documents through vehicles instead of a postage system to reduce the risk of arrest. For a long time, RSS member Nagar Bhai Chavada remembered that Modi used code words like “Chandan Ka Karamkram” for meetings and remained in many exit routes houses in case of police raids. The book highlights his cooperation with senior RSS leaders Nath Zagda and Vasant Gajendragadkar, and how he advised volunteers to keep community contacts alive despite the ban on RSS branches.Sharing his reflections on social media, PM Modi wrote: “The emergency diary brought back many memories. I urge all those who remember or whose families were suffering during the Emergency, to create awareness among the youth of those dark days to share their stories online.”(With PTI input)
