New Delhi: While sharing the deep emotional memories of his family’s struggles and sacrifices during an event organized by the Nagpur District Court Bar Association, Chief Justice of India Bhushan Ramakrishna Gawai presented a rare glimpse in his personal journey on Friday. Last month became the 52nd CJI, Gawai suffocated with the feelings seen in his eyes because he remembered how his parents shaped their way in life and law.“I wanted to be an architect,” CJI revealed, “but my father had different dreams for me. He always wanted me to be a lawyer, a dream that he could not fulfill himself,” according to the news agency PTI.Gawai talked about his father’s dedication due to Bram Ambedkar and his family’s burden. “My father gave himself to serve Ambedkar. He himself wanted to be a lawyer, but could not fulfill that wish as he was arrested to be a part of the freedom movement,” he said. Picked up in a joint family, Gawai recalled how his mother and aunt bore the house responsibilities after their father’s imprisonment. In a moving tribute, the Chief Justice recalled how his father, when his name was recommended to the judge, said, “If you are a lawyer, you will only go after money, but if you become a judge, you will follow the path kept by Ambedkar and do well for the society.” Gavai said, “My father always thought that one day I will become the Chief Justice of India. Sadly, he died in 2015. But I am happy that my mother is there to see it.”The emotional moment was briefly lightened by the remembrance of a celebrity case of Gawai. He joked about the day when a large crowd brought to court in a check bounce case associated with actor Hema Malini, recalling, “Hema Malini had so much crowd in the court that day to get a glimpse of Malini … but we could not help but enjoy the moment.”Looking forward, he indicated to write retirement after his memoir in November this year.
