New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi recalled the emergency imposed 50 years ago on Sunday, called it one of the most dark chapters in his monthly value in Democratic history of India.Referring to the emergency imposed in 1975, PM Modi said, “Those who had imposed emergency not only killed the spirit of the Constitution, but also tried to suppress the judiciary as puppets.,He said that the country had marked as an emergency 50 years ago and emergency was imposed a few days ago and saw it as ‘Samvidan Hatya Day’. He said, “We must remember those who bravely fought against the Emergency. It inspires us to be vigilant for the safety of our constitution,” he said.During the address, the Prime Minister also played archial audio recording of speeches by leaders like Morarji Desai, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, and Jagjivan Ram, who remembered the atrocities faced by the people during the emergency period.The Emergency was declared on 25 June 1975, and lasted for 21 months until March 1977. It was marked by the suspension of civil liberties, press censorship and widespread arrest of political leaders.
