Earthquake earthquake 4.9 shock Afghanistan

Kabul: A 4.9 magnitude earthquake in a statement by the National Center for Sisamology (NCS) shocked Afghanistan on Sunday.According to the NCS, the earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 10 km, making it susceptible to the afterchox. In a post on X, NCS said, “EQ of M: 4.9: 30/06/2025 08:02:35 IST, Lat: 36.77 N, Long: 71.13 E, Depth: 10 km, Location: Afghanistan.”Earlier on June 28, another earthquake of magnitude 4.3 hit the region at a depth of 120 km.In a post on X, NCS said, “EQ of M: 4.3: 28/06/2025 20:01:13 IST, Lat: 36.37N, Long: 71.06E, depth: 120 km, location: Afghanistan.”Such shallow earthquakes are more dangerous than deep people due to its greater energy release close to the Earth’s surface. This causes an increase in strong ground tremors and damage to structures and casualties than deep earthquakes, which lose energy while traveling to the surface.According to the Red Cross, Afghanistan has a history of a powerful earthquake, and the Hindu Kush mountain range is a geologically active area, where there are quakes every year.Afghanistan sits on several mistake lines between Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, in which a mistake line also runs directly through Herat. Its location on several active mistake lines with a collision area between Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates makes it seismically active area. These plates are found and collides, causing frequent seismic activity.According to the United Nations Office for coordination of human affairs (UNOCHA), Afghanistan is highly unsafe for natural disasters including seasonal floods, landslides and earthquakes. These frequent earthquakes in Afghanistan cause damage to weak communities, who have already been struggling for decades of struggle and low development and have left them with a little flexibility to deal with many shocks together, Anoka noted.
