New Delhi: At a time when criminalization of politics is increasing, the Supreme Court surprised on Monday when it was reported that Tamil Nadu MLA M Jagan Murthy had no criminal predecessor and due to which the apex court granted him anticipatory bail in the kidnapping case of a boy.“It is surprising on the positive side,” said a bench of Justice Manoj Mishra and N. Kotiswar Singh, when senior advocate Siddharth Luthra, who attended the MLA, had no criminal background of the elected representative.Murthy Purchi is the president of the Bharam Party, who is an ally of the main opposition party AIADMK in Tamil Nadu. The bench said in its order, “If the petitioner is arrested in connection with the FIR registered at Thiruvalangdu police station, he will be released on a personal bond of Rs 25, subject to this venture, he will cooperate in the investigation and will not threaten or witness the evidence.”Murthy approached SC to challenge Madras HC’s 27 June order, dismissing his petition for anticipatory bail. He claimed that the case is being implicated in the case based on an confession statement by a co-compulsion, without any direct or corroborative evidence to connect him to the alleged crime.
