New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party on Thursday showed civilian body workers after CCTV footage against Congress-led Karnataka government, showing stickers randomly without collecting any data during the ongoing door-door survey of scheduled caste houses in Karnataka.BJP MP PC Mohan shared the video in a social media post, termed the entire practice as “comedy of errors”.Mohan said, “In 2015, the Congress government spent 170 crores on a caste census in Karnataka, then blamed the dogs for its flaws.”He said, “Now in Bengaluru, BBMP is pasting the caste stickers without collecting any data. From dogs to data-less plays, the Congress’ idea of social justice is a comedy of errors,” he said.In CCTV footage, two BBMP workers were seen clicking on the pictures without pasting stickers at a house and collecting any data from the residents. It has come after the Karnataka government started a survey to collect data on Scheduled Castes Sub-Cast to guide its internal reservation policy.Chief Minister Siddaramaiah called it necessary to ensure equal distribution of social justice and benefits. He said, “There are 101 sub-kasts including left, right, lamina and others, but no empirical data is available,” he said, the 2011 census lacks this granulation. The government decided to conduct a fresh caste survey after fears by some classes about the data of previous caste census. The census report of the caste census presented to the Karnataka cabinet recommended increasing reservation for backward communities from current 32% to 51%.This recommendation is based on the findings of socio-economic and educational survey, also known as a caste census, which highlights that backward communities create about 70% of the population of the state. The final report was presented to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in February 2024.The survey has faced opposition from various community groups, including voices within the ruling Congress party. While some leaders and organizations representing Dalits and OBC groups supported the publication of the survey, the others continued to oppose its implementation, citing public funds of Rs 160 crore spent on it.
