New Delhi: Major opposition parties have agreed in principle to support a proposal to remove Justice Yashwant Verma of Allahabad High Court, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju said on Thursday. He said that the process of collecting signature to start motion from MPs could start soon.The government remains to decide whether the proposal will be introduced in the Lok Sabha or Rajya Sabha. For the lower home, at least 100 MPs should support the proposal, while in the upper house, support from 50 MPs requires support. Rijiju said that once the decision will be gathered, the signature will be collected in which house.The monsoon session of Parliament is scheduled from 21 July to 21 August. Under the Judges (Inquiry) Act, 1968, a proposal to remove once is either admitted to the House, formed a three -member committee to investigate the allegations. The panel consists of the Chief Justice of India (or a judge of the Supreme Court), a Chief Justice of a High Court and a reputed jurist.The step came months after the fire broke out at the official residence of Justice Verma, discovering sacks with chartered cash in the outhouse. Although Justice Verma denied the knowledge of money, an SC-appointed panel found evidence against him after the witnesses and records of their own statements.Justice Verma, then serving in Delhi HC, was sent back to Allahabad HC, where he is not assigned judicial work. Sources said that former CJI Sanjeev Khanna had urged him to resign, but Justice Verma refused. CJI later wrote to the President and the Prime Minister, recommended to remove them – the first step in the constitutional process to dismiss a judge.
