New Delhi: Central Trade Unions have announced a nationwide strike for July 9, in which more than 25 crore workers from different regions expect to participate.The strike is also supported by many rural and agricultural labor organizations. Unions say they are protesting against government policies that help big businesses but hurt workers, farmers and poor.
Why are the workers protesting?
The unions also claimed that the government departments were hiring retired personnel instead of young professionals, citing examples of Railways, NMDC Limited, Steel Sector and Education Services. He argues that this trend is harmful in a country where 65 percent of the population is less than 35, and unemployment is the highest among people within 20 to 25 years.

- The organizers hope that more than 250 million people in various fields will participate in the bandh. This includes workers from both organized and unorganized sectors, which also expect strong participation from farmers and rural workers.
- Strike -led unions include Intrak, AITUC, City, HMS, Siva, AIUTUC, AICCTU, LPF, UTUC and TUCC. These unions have come together to raise concerns about the government’s labor and economic policies.
- They are particularly important for new labor codes, which they claim that weakening workers’ rights, will extend the working hours, and make unions difficult to create or go on strike.
- They are also demanding more government jobs, increase in growth
MGNREGA wages And similar employment schemes for workdays, and urban areas.
- The unions have presented a 17 -digit demand list to the Labor Minister, but they say that there is no serious response from the government.
- Banks are expected to be open, as there is no holiday listed by the Reserve Bank of India on 9 July. However, banking services can still be interrupted when bank workers join the strike.
- On the other hand, the stock markets will work as usual, and there is no scheduled trading holiday.
- Schools, colleges and government offices are expected to be open. No official closure has been announced.
- However, public transport services can be affected in many fields, which may delay for passengers, students and office-goals. In the previous attacks, the level of participation varies from the location, and in some areas the announcements of the final-minute affecting the operation of the school were observed.
- This is not the first time trade unions have organized such protests. Similar attacks were held on 26 November, 2020, March 28-29, 2022 and 16 February 2024, focusing on issues such as privatization of public sector units, insecurity of jobs and contingency of workforce.
