The International Chase Federation (FIDE) revealed on Monday that India would host the 2025 FID World Cup.The site has not been decided yet, but the tournament is scheduled from 30 October to 2 November.The world’s top players will exclude it for the iconic title and qualification locations in the 2026 FIDe candidates.Fid CEO Emil Sutowski said: “We are thrilled to bring the Fide World Cup 2025 to India, a deep roots passion and support for chess. The enthusiasm of fans of Indian chess has always been notable, and we are very interested in this event between local chess lovers, both-site and online. What is the format?

The FIDE World Cup 2025 will compete 206 players in the knockout format.This phenomenon has used several formats over the years, but since 2021, it has followed a single-origin format. Each round consists of three days: two classical games in the first two days, followed by tie-breakes on the third day, if necessary.In the first round, the top 50 players receive the bye, while the players competed from 51 to 206, based on the principle of the top half, the pair versus reversed the lower half.

The top three finishers of the 2025 World Cup will earn a direct qualification for the 2026 candidate tournament, which determines the Challenger for the World Chess Championship.

Who can be qualified?

Players can qualify for the World Cup through various routes, including:

  • World Champion’s reign by June 1, 2025
  • Top Four Finisher from Fid World Cup 2023
  • Women’s World Champion’s reign by June 1, 2025
  • 2024 World Junior Champion (U-20)
  • Qualifier from Continental events (accounting for 80 spots)
  • In June 2025, 13 highest-rated players are on the Fide Standard rating list that are not eligible through other routes
  • Top 100 National Association from 2024 Chess Olympiad Open Section, each receives a place
  • Fide President’s 4 nominee
