New Delhi: Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned from his post on Monday evening citing medical reasons. His decision has opened the area for the selection of a new vice -president.In his resignation letter to President Draupadi Murmu, Dhankhar wrote: “To give priority to health care and to follow medical advice, I resign as India’s vice president, immediately effective, according to Article 67 (A) of the Constitution.”74 -year -old Dhankhar took over in August 2022. His term was to continue till 2027. As the Vice President, he also played the post of President of Rajya Sabha. His resignation came on the first day of the monsoon session of Parliament.The BJP -led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), who holds a majority in the election college, the vice -president of both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, was surprised by the move. The ruling coalition is expected to discuss potential candidates in the coming days.The BJP is likely to choose a candidate from a broad pool including serving the current governor, senior leader of the party organization, or Union ministers. Before becoming the Vice President, Dhankhar was the Governor of West Bengal.The predecessor, M Venkaiah Naidu, was a former BJP president and a cabinet minister in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government, when the party selected him for the post of Vice President in 2017.There were several conflicts with opposition parties in the Rajya Sabha during Dhankhar’s three -year tenure. His public remarks on various matters had created concern within the government several times.PTI said to the BJP leader, “We are still processing it. But I believe that the party will choose someone who is a concrete option and is non-contact.”Among the people being discussed as possible options, Rajya Sabha Vice President Harivesh is a Janata Dal (United) MP who has held the post since 2020. He is seen as a person who enjoys the trust of the government.Dhankhar is the third vice -president of India after VV Giri and R Venkataraman to resign during their tenure. Both Giri and Venkataraman left the post of Vice President to contest the presidential election. According to the rules, elections should be held within the next six months to fill the post of Vice President. As long as a new vice president is elected, Rajya Sabha Vice President can take action of the House.
