England star Joe Root, in a chat with Harsh Bhogle for Sony Sports, reflected on his praise for Sachin Tendulkar, a light moment during India’s own debut tour, and his current place among the greats of Test cricket. Since 2013, an old tweet of the route recently surfaced again, where he wrote, “Sachin made his debut for India before being born. Then I was played in my Test debut. #Thankyousachin.” Now speaking, Root shared, “Sachin is one of the great people. The pressure he achieved was just unprecedented. When you play against him, you want to copy him, try to follow him. It was a true honor to get an opportunity to face him.”

Route recently moved up second in the list of all-time Test Run-Scorers, beating Rahul Dravid, Jacques Kallis and Ricky Ponting during his brilliant 150 against India. Now on 13,409 runs, he sits 2,512 behind Tendulkar’s record tally 15,921.

Do you believe that the route can cross the record of Sachin Tendulkar?

Describing the moment, Root said, “This is a pinch of moment. Growing up, I pretended to be Ricky Ponting, Kumar Sangakkara or Bryan Lara in my garden or local club. Just good to see his name.” Asked about Tendulkar’s possibility of chasing, he played it. “This is not something that I will focus on. Those things should take care of myself. It should be about focus sports.” Root accepted the noise around his milestone, but said, “The numbers are everywhere, they are not? But you try not to get stuck in it. If you are only thinking about yourself then you are not doing your work.”
