Guwahati: The Assam government on Tuesday used Assamese compulsory in all official communication with English, while Bengali and Bodo will be used in the Barak Valley and Bodo Autonomous Region respectively.
This instruction comes as part of the implementation of Claus VI of Assam Accord of 1985, which aims to protect the cultural, social and linguistic identity of Assamese people. This order is one of the 52 recommendations submitted by the retired Justice Biplab Kumar Sharma Commission.
CM Himant Biswa Sarma announced a step on X, saying the order came into force on Tuesday as the state marked the Assamese New Year and celebrated Rongli Bihu.
Under notification of Governor issued through Assam official language The Act of 1960, all government information, office memo, act, rules, regulations, planning guidelines, and transfer and posting orders will be published in both Assamese and English. Bengali and Bodo will be used equally in their respective fields, along with English.
All the documents of all the central government – including the Act, Rules, Orders and Information – to Assamese, or wherever applied, wherever applies, within 30 days of receiving by the State Department.
In the next two years, heritage documents such as laws, regulations and information will also be translated into Assamese (Bodo and Bengali, wherever applied). The language departments of state universities will help in this process.
In case of ambiguity or legal issues, the English version of the documents will be considered official. English will also be used for communication for documents related to the central government, other states and all courts.
