Chennai: A packed court room in Chennai recently became silent as a young woman, missing for a decade, unexpectedly appeared to testify against a man who abducted her at the age of 12. He was sentenced to life imprisonment.
Back in 2015, the child was living with his family on the first floor of a house in Chennai. The son -in -law of the house owner, Abbas Ali, then 41, abused him often. On 7 February that year, Abbas Ali kidnapped him and took him to Dindigul, about 430 km from Chennai. There, he booked a hotel room and raped her before leaving her and returning to the city.
Her parents recalled a complaint to a child and the police found the girl two days later. A case was registered against Abbas Ali on the basis of mother’s complaint. But what should happen, an open and shut case became uncertain-until the day, the girl was missing again.
The family was disintegrated under pressure. Parents separated, and mother and child moved to a remote village in southern Tamil Nadu for safety and oblivion. But Ali tracked him and threatened to kill him when he returned to Chennai to testify.
To be safe, mother and daughter started living under new identity, transformed from village to village. The girl was deeply affected by trauma and there is no access to psychological help, out of school. Both survived daily wages work.
Despite the obstacles, MKB Nagar All-Mahilla Police continued efforts to locate the survivor. Earlier this year, he located him and brought him to court, said Special Public Prosecutor S Anita.
Now 22, the woman hesitated and stumbled through her statement, but finally remembered the years spent in sexual exploitation and hiding, testifying to the court that it was about 10 years to hear.
Based on his testimony, Abbas Ali was sentenced to life imprisonment. On April 3, the judge also directed the state to pay Rs 15 lakh as compensation to the state.
