New Delhi: After the tragic accident of Air India Flight 171 on June 12, the airline announced that it has spread Rs 25 lakh to the families of 147 out of 229 passengers in interim compensation, as well as the families of 19 other people who lost their lives on the crash site. The purpose of interim payment is to meet the immediate financial needs of the affected families and will be adjusted against the amount of the final compensation to be set later.In a statement released on Saturday, the airline reiterated its support for the victims and their families. The airline said, “Air India stands in solidarity with families and people affected by the AI171 accident. We mourn their loss and are fully committed to provide assistance during this difficult time,” the airline said.“A month ago, Air India started releasing interim payments of Rs 25 lakh to the affected families to help them meet their immediate financial requirements,” the statement said. The airline also confirmed that documentation for additional 52 families has been verified and interim compensation would be progressively discharged.“Air India, so far, has issued interim compensation to families of 147 out of 229 deceased passengers and also that 19 who have lost their lives at the accident site. Also, 52 others have been verified the expected documents of others, whose families will be issued interim compensation progressively,” said in the statement.With this financial assistance, the Tata Group has established the ‘AI -171 Memorial and Welfare Trust’ in honor of the victims of the Air India Flight 171 tragedy. The Trust has promised to pay a pre-Rs 1 crore for each deceased person. In addition, it would contribute to the reconstruction of the BJ Medical College Hostel, which was damaged in the accident.According to the statement, the trust would first support responders, healthcare workers, disaster relief teams, social workers and government personnel who played an important role after the accident, helping to address any trauma or crisis, which he had experienced.
