‘Alarming, illegal’: Chidambaram flag voter shifts; Question on migrant inclusion in TN EC, large scale deletion in Bihar. Bharat News

New Delhi: Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram on Sunday slammed India’s Election Commission (ECI) to add about 6.5 lakh “migrant workers” to the election role of Tamil Nadu, while about 65 million people were declared “permanent migrates” and removed from Bihar’s voter list.He described the move as “dangerous” and “illegally illegally” under special intensive amendment (SIR) exercise, describing it as the misuse of power by pole body, which should be “political and legally fought”.In a series of posts on the social media platform X, the former Home Minister asked, how did the ECI determine that millions of persons listed in the current electoral rolls of Bihar should be removed from the state for ‘permanent migrates’ outside the state? He further said, before reaching any such conclusion, a thorough investigation should be done on the basis of the case-by-case. And how can any such investigation be done in a period of 30 days involving more than 37 lakh people?Chidambaram wrote: “Every Indian has the right to live and work in any state where he has a permanent house. This is clear and correct. How did ECI come to the conclusion that several lakh people, whose names are in the current electoral rolls of Bihar, should be excluded because they had ‘permanent migration’ out of the state? that is the question. Before you come to the conclusion that a person has permanently migrated out of a state, should not be completely investigated in each case? How can this type of investigation involving 37 lakh persons in a period of 30 days? Mass Disinfection is a serious issue, and that is why the Supreme Court is hearing petitions. ,Apart from migrant workers for Tamil Nadu’s electoral rolls, the Congress veteran questioned why migrants should not return to their states for voting, draw a analogy with people returning to Bihar for festivals like “Chhath Puja”.He wrote, “Why should the migrant worker not return to Bihar (or its home state) to vote in the state assembly elections, as they usually do? Do the migrant workers not return to Bihar at the time of Chhath Puja Festival?”The senior leader said that it is an insult to the migrant workers to call him “permanent migrated” and there is a gross interference in the rights of Tamil Nadu voters to choose the government of their choice. The former Union Minister also asked how the legal housemates in Bihar were registered as voters in Tamil Nadu.“A person who is nominated as a voter should have a certain and permanent legal house. A migrant worker has such a house in Bihar (or any other state). How can he be nominated as a voter in Tamil Nadu? If the family of a migrant worker has a permanent house in Bihar and lives in Bihar, the migrant worker can be considered as ‘permanently as migrated’? The post added to X.Chidambaram accused the Election Commission of abolishing his authority. He said, “ECI is misusing its powers and is trying to change the electoral character and pattern of the states. This misuse of the powers should be political and legally fought from @cmotamilnadu,” he said.
