Anil Kumbal on Shubman Gill: ‘Captaining India is different from the captaincy of a franchise’. Cricket news

Former Indian cricket captain Anil Kumble on Monday expressed confidence in Shubman Gill’s ability to lead the Indian test team during an Australian summer chat at Cricket 2025-26 event in Mumbai. 25 -year -old Gill is ready for Captain India in the upcoming five -match England tour, which marks a transition phase after retirement of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Ravichandran Ashwin after retirement.Kumbal, while discussing Gill’s appointment, addressed unique challenges to lead the Indian national team compared to franchise cricket.Kumbal said, “The captaincy for India is slightly different for a franchise or captaincy to any state; it comes with its responsibilities and pressure. But I am sure Shubman will find out it and I think he is capable,” Kumble said. The veteran spinner accepted a significant change in the Indian cricket scenario with the departure of three major players.
He said, “For the infection and three pillars of Indian cricket, not for a long time, it is not available. It is also different for us, as fans, when the Indian cricket team takes land in the first test, not to see three names there,” he said.Kumbal expressed optimism about the new era led by Gill.“But this is the beginning of a young team and it is a new cycle of WTC, which I am sure that this current team will see to win and then will come into that final and hopefully organize the trophy one day, so I am sure Shubman will try and create that kind of heritage,” he said.Quiz: Who is that IPL player? The former captain discussed the challenges faced by Kohli and Rohit, who will continue to play ODI cricket.Kumble said, “It is not easy to do what they have to do in terms of one ODI preparation, which is six months below the line. This is a challenge, no matter what you are and how well you have done your career for years,” Kumbal said.He emphasized the importance of celebrating the contribution of these experienced players.“But they are champion players, so they know how to maneuver, and as long as they play, it is important to convince the champion players. You go into each performance thread on how they had played or how they could play,” he said.
Kumble addressed his World Cup aspirations.“What is important is important to convince what is with two players. Ideally, they would like to play till the 2027 World Cup, because nothing like this happened. We saw that the 2023 final trophy was holding with Australia, “he said.India is scheduled to play three ODIs and five T20Is in Australia in October this year.Kumble highlighted the potentially emerging talents, especially mentioning Sai Reformson. He said, “The legends who are no longer playing in the second format, definitely want to make a mark, Virat and Rohit, and I am sure many people would like to see it in Australia,” they commented.

Do you think India will win the World Test Championship under the captaincy of Shubman Gill?
He expressed confidence in the new players who made their identity.“I think someone like Yashasvi Jaiswal … Sai Reformson, I think it will make it for that team, although it is not part of it. But I think he is going to be in England on the basis of performance and will be to see someone,” Kumble said.He also mentioned expectations for the T20 format.“Of course, in the T20 format, Suryakumar is someone who is sure we all want to see. I think one of the (top) artists of this IPL will be a part of it. I don’t know who it is, but I am sure that a wonderful performance has been done, he would definitely want to ignore those people.”
