New Delhi: Congress President Mallikrajun Kharge criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday in New Delhi, labeling him as “the enemy of Babasaheb”.

During a press conference in the national capital, Kharge highlighted the historic opposition faced by Hindu organizations when he adopted Buddhism.
“These people were even then and still were the enemies of Babasaheb. Even when he was alive, he did not support him. When Baba Saheb adopted Buddhism, do you know what these people had said? He said that he is from Mahar community, an untouchable. He also said that Buddha was made a untouchable.
Kharge addressed the women’s reservation bill, insisting on the demand of the Congress for specific reservation for SC, ST and OBC women.
“When the Women’s Reservation Bill was passed 2 years ago, the Congress party demanded that it be implemented immediately. Our demand was that SC, ST and OBC should be given reservation in it. This is our objective. We have been fighting for it for a long time. It was decided in Ahmedabad Convention to start a campaign to take it forward,” he said.
The Congress President, while questioning his real contribution to his principles, challenged the BJP’s claims about following Ambedkar’s ideology.
Earlier on that day, in Haryana, in Haryana, to inaugurate the first direct commercial flight for Ayodhya, Prime Minister Modi accused the Congress of opposing the Waqf Amendment Act purely for vote bank politics.
Modi said, “Congress has become destructive of formation. Dr. Bribedkar wanted to bring in equality, but the Congress spread the virus of vote bank politics. Babasaheb wanted every poor, capable of living with every backward dignity and high, dreams with their heads, dreaming and fulfilling them,” Modi said.
The Prime Minister defended the recently passed Waqf Amendment Act, assured protection for SC, ST and OBC land from Vakf encroachment.
Modi said, “The loot of the poor will stop with this revised Waqf law. Under the new Waqf Act, no tribal land or property can be touched by the Waqf Board … poor Muslims and Pasmanda Muslims will get their rights. It is real social justice,” Modi said.
Modi also recalled the historical opposition of the Congress for Ambedkar’s election campaigns.
“We should not forget what the Congress did to Babasaheb. The Congress humiliated him while surviving. They lost him twice.
The exchange between political leaders comes when India on 14 April 2025 Dr. BR prepares to celebrate Ambedkar’s 135th birth anniversary.
Ambedkar, who is lovingly known as ‘Babasaheb’, served as the first Law and Justice Minister of independent India and is famous as the Chief architect of the Indian Constitution.
Born into a poor Dalit Mahar family in Madhya Pradesh, Ambedkar dedicated his life to fight the same rights to the margins of society, eaten recognition as a ‘Dalit icon’ for his contribution to his rights.
