‘Battle against violent extremism’: Canadian PM Mark Carney on Air India Kanishka bombing; Pays homage

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Monday called the 1985 Air India Flight 182 Kanishka a “deadliest attack” in Canada’s history.In a message posted on X, he said the Canadian government “unevenly stand against terrorism.”Carney said, “40 years ago, Canada faced the deadliest terrorist attack in its history. Today, we mourn all those killed in 268 Canadian victims of Air India bombing and terrorism acts – a memory of our commitment to fight violent extremism and keep Canadians safe.”On June 23, 1985, Air India Flight 182 was blown into Middle Hawa near Cork, Ireland, killing all 329 people. The bombing was carried out by Khalistani terrorist group Babbar Khalsa in Canada. Most of the victims were Canadian citizens of Indian origin.In his official statement as a remembrance of the National Day for the victims of terrorism, Carney said, “As we mark the remembrance of National Day for the victims of terrorism, we remember the victims of Air India bombing and all other people who have lost their lives for terrorism.He said, “The new government of Canada is unevenly stands against terrorism, and we will distribute on the mandate of our change to protect communities.”Opposition leader and orthodox party chief Pierre Pilevere also recalled the victims. He posted on X, “Today we remember 329 innocent lives lost in the flight 182 bombing of Air India-the most Canadian. Canadian conservatives will always be committed to defeating terrorism, protecting innocents and maintaining freedom.,On Monday, a memorial program was held at Ahakista Memorial in Ireland, where Canadian Public Safety Minister Gary Anandsangari Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri and Irish Prime Minister Machela Martin attended. The three leaders garlanded the victims.During the ceremony, Hardeep Singh Puri emphasized the need for strong cooperation between India and Canada to fight terrorism. PTI quoted Puri as saying, “India is ready to do more. Our security agencies, intelligence, and diplomatic channels are completely committed to partnering with the world to ensure that such tragedies are never repeated.”County Cork mayor, councilor Joe Carol also laid a wreath. Many people, including school children, participated in the event and paid homage with music and flowers, remembering the lost life in tragic bombing.
