Union Minister Kiren Rijiju attended the 90th birthday celebrations of the 14th Dalai Lama in Himachal Pradesh on Sunday. The incident was marked by expressions of prayer, tribute and deep reverence for the Tibetan spiritual leader. In exile, the Tibetan Buddhist monks made special prayers at the Dorzidak Math near Shimla to honor the milestone.Addressing the gathering, Kiren Rijiju said, “… your purity, you are more than a spiritual leader. You are a living bridge between ancient knowledge and modern world.”He said, “We feel blessed by his presence in our country, which he considers as his ‘Aryabhumi’.”On the eve of his birthday, during the ceremony at the Dalai Lama Temple in McLeodganj, the Dalai Lama reflected on life in exile. “Although we have lost our country and we are living in exile in India, this is the place where I am able to benefit the creatures. The ceremony came amid fresh debate on the Dalai Lama’s succession, the dispute between India and China. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning recently stated that the selection of the next Dalai Lama should follow a process approved by Beijing, warning India to handle affairs related to Tibet with “caution” to avoid bilateral relations.Responding to the comments, Rijiju confirmed India’s situation, saying, “As a devotee and from millions of devotees around the world, I want to tell that whatever decision has been taken by purity, established traditions and conferences, we will fully follow it and follow directions and guidelines.” The Dalai Lama has also made it clear that his successor would be selected by India-based Gaden Fodrang Trust, which was a non-profit institution, had rejected any external intervention-a message was widely seen as a widely directed in China.
