New Delhi: The Calcutta High Court on Thursday granted interim bail to influential social media and law student Sharmisha Panoli, about a week later a week after arrest to hurt religious sentiments through an Instagram video. Panoli was arrested on 30 May. The High Court directed Panoli to present a bond of Rs 10,000.The 22 -year -old, who was detained by Kolkata Police from Gurugram last Friday, was sent to judicial custody by a local court in Kolkata till 13 June. However, his legal team demanded relief to the High Court, saying that the case was a case of free speech and Panoli had already removed the controversial video and released an apology.His lawyer, MD Samimuddin said that the court directed the state to ensure that panoli provides basic facilities while detention, given that such provisions were currently decreased. He said, “The High Court has also directed the officials not to register any fresh FIR on the same reason of action,” he said. The arrest arms from a complaint filed by Vajahat Khan Qadri at the Kolkata police station in the garden. He accused Panoli of sharing “communal” materials in a video, discussing Bollywood’s silence on ‘Operation Sindoor’. However, the police have since filed an FIR against Qadri for allegedly posting inflammatory content online. He is now absconding, the authorities confirmed.Sharmisha’s arrest instigated backlash with legal circles. Bar Council of India President Manan Kumar Mishra called it a “serious abortion” and accused the West Bengal government of implementing selected laws on the basis of community identity.
