Crime statistics scam in DC: Justice Department opens the investigation; Potential manipulation
The Department of Justice is investigating whether Washington, DC, Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) manipulated the crime data to portray the misleading fall in the crime, according to two senior law enforcement officials, NBC News said.The investigation is being supervised by the US Attorney Office for DC under the leadership of Genin Piro.The investigation follows a report, which revealed that Commander Michael Pulum was placed on the paid leave in May, in which he changed the crime figures in his district on the allegations. According to NBC4, the culvert has denied wrongdoing The investigation is expected to widen, check whether other police or city officials may join the data manipulation.US President Donald Trump publicly supported the investigation, accusing the city of providing “fake crime numbers” to create a “false confusion of security”. It’s a very bad and dangerous thing, and they are under serious investigation to do so!”Meanwhile, Mayor Murial Boussar pointed to MPD data, which showed a downward fall of 26–27 percent in the year, arguing that a federal acquisition of the department was unnecessary.
