‘Criminal material on social media’: After shooting British Columbia, Surrey’s mayor made a statement; Searchs for immediate reforms

In the British Columbia, Canada, Surrey Mayor Brand Locke has issued an immediate appeal to the meta, X, tickets and all other social media platforms to block violent materials and allow criminals to spread fear and threats to use their network.Lock posted in a statement on X, “I am calling on Meta, X, Tiktok, and other social platforms to prevent violent criminals from allowing their networks to create weapons against people.”Recently, after shooting in a local business, the appeal was recorded by a person who then uploaded the footage claiming the responsibility for the attack. Mayor Locke condemned the Act, saying that it not only targeted the victim, but also intended to terrorize the entire community.“It is unbearable that legitimate news materials are blocked on some social media platforms, while videos that glorify violent crime are broadcast independently,” their statement states. “Corporate responsibility and basic decency require immediate, decisive action.”Mayor Locke visited the site of the incident, a cup cafe, where he spoke to employees and customers who expressed growing fear for their safety. For immediate reforms, Mayor Locke urged social media companies to permanently ban accounts associated with criminal organizations; Immediately remove any material that promotes or glorifies violent crime and applies real -time detection devices to prevent such material from spreading.Locke said that criminal organizations should not be allowed to use social media to intimidate people and celebrate violence. He further emphasized that these steps are not optional, but are necessary. The Mayor said that collective efforts from residents and law enforcement require collective efforts to technology companies to keep the Surrey safe. He continued cooperation with Surrey Police Service, RCMP and federal officials, while social media platforms should also take responsibility.“We will not allow criminals to decide how we live or work. I am confident, together, we will keep Surrey safe, flexible and fearless,” his post read.
