New Delhi: Deaths due to accidents on national highways have come down. The Ministry of Road Transport informed the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday that 53,372 people died in road accidents on NH network in 2023 and it increased to 52,609 during the last year. Government data showed that in 2022, there were 61,038 deadly 61,038 on NH.In a written reply, the ministry said that the government has published reports of annual road accidents by 2022. “Further, Electronic Detailed Accident Report (EDAR) portal has been developed, a central repository for reporting, management and analysis of road accidents across the country,” the Ministry said. Quoting Edar data, it was said that by June this year, 26,770 people lost their lives in accidents on NHS.The ministry said that NHAI has set up the Advanced Traffic Management System (ATM) on high-travel density NHS and National Expressway such as Delhi-Miyrut Expressway, Trans-Haryana, Eastern Perceptional Expressway and Delhi Mumbai Expressway.“ATMs have provisions for various electronic enforcement devices that help to identify the events on the highway stretch and effectively monitor the highways, which improves the aid reaction time on the site,” it said.Responding to a separate question, the Ministry said that during the last three years, Road Safety Audits have been organized for 1.1 lakh km NHS.
