‘Didi will protect you and your property’: Mamta Banerjee says that the Waqf Act will not be implemented in Bengal

New Delhi: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday urged members of the minority community to remain united and not misleading political stimuli, which amid the increasing unrest on the implementation of the Waqf Act, 2025.
Banerjee said that the Waqf Act will not be implemented in Bengal.
Mamta also said that she would protect minority communities and their property, while speaking ‘Navkar Mahamant Diva‘Program in Kolkata.
“I know you are suffering from the issue of Waqf property, but believe that there will be no division and governance in Bengal,” Banerjee said. “Please remember, Didi will protect you and your property. You should give a message of live and live. It is our duty to protect all the people living in Bengal.”
He added a cautious notes, urging the members of the community not to get into the political net. “If someone provokes you to gather politically, please do not do it. If we live together, we can win the world.”
“See the situation in Bangladesh. This (Waqf Bill) should not have been passed,” said Banerjee.
Banerjee accused the Center of trying to divide the nation through “Jumla” politics.
Earlier, the Bengal CM also took a jib at the BJP -led center, alleging that it was chasing a divisive agenda. “The only point of the Jumla Party is to divide the country. First learn to respect the constitution, and then talk about removing someone’s rights,” he said, rejecting the Waqf Act as part of a comprehensive “partition and rule policy”.
Violent protests in Murshidabad
Shortly after the Act came into force on Tuesday, violent protests began in Murshidabad, where protesters allegedly tortured a police vehicle. The administration allegedly used the Internet in the area to prevent the spread of misinformation.
BJP IT cell head Amit Malviya shared videos of unrest – unaffected by independent sources – and blamed Banerjee’s “politics of Muslim appeasement” for the situation. “The West Bengal Police is struggling to curb the violent Islamist mob … Probably under the instructions of Home Minister Mamata Banerjee,” she claimed in a post on X.
He further alleged that the protesters dismissed the constitution and raised slogans and demanded Banerjee’s resignation. Malavia said, “His inflammatory speeches have contributed directly to the current unrest.”
Center stand on Waqf Act
The WAQF Act, 2025, is aimed at streamlining the management of waqf properties through updated definitions, digital integration and more transparency. While the Center defends it as an essential improvement, opposition leaders, including vice, sees it as a target law that means to curb minority rights.
Protests against the Act in Manipur on Tuesday were also reported, where the members of the Muslim community took to the streets opposing the Center’s move.
