New Delhi: Senior Congress leader and former Union Minister P Chidambaram said in the Election Commission of India (ECI) on Sunday, saying that it is “not a court” and should not act like one while dealing with petitions or complaints. In a post on X, Chidambaram wrote, “ECI is not a court and cannot behave like a court in recreational petitions or complaints. It is an administrative body that works with ensuring independent and fair elections.”Explaining the scope of Rule 20 (3) (B), he said that it only applies when an election registration officer (ERO) accepts or rejects a specific claim to be included in the electoral role-not in cases of alleged large scale manipulation of the role of the role of the Constitution.Citing a newspaper report, he alleged that complaints of booth level agents in Bihar are being ignored. “If true, it will face the death of Democratic elections to refuse to entertain the complaints during the special intensive amendment (SIR),” he warned, saying that ECI’s duty is beyond the procedure for the protection of the rights of political parties and voters.Meanwhile, the Election Commission has reiterated its stand that Rahul Gandhi should either submit an assistant document or apologize for his recent “vote theft” allegations. The reminder is a notice from the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Karnataka and followed by the CEO of Haryana. In a letter of August 10, the CEO of Karnataka said that Rahul Gandhi during his press conference on August 7, citing ECI records alleged that a voter named Shakun Rani voted twice, based on data shown by a polling officer. However, the voter denied the allegation, and officials said that the tick-marked document displayed by Rahul Gandhi was not issued by the polling officer, which increased doubt about its authenticity. The CEO of Karnataka has asked Rahul Gandhi to share the original documents that form the basis of his claim to conduct a detailed investigation.
