The film ‘Emergency’, a very discussed film of Kangana Ranaut, has once again got into legal trouble. The historical drama, shown as former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, is now caught in a legal mess after senior journalist and writer. Komi Kapoor The lawsuit filed against the manufacturers.
As said by PTI, Kapoor has accused Kangana’s production house, Manicarnica Films Private Limited, and streaming platform Netflix incorrectly using his book and name, and changing the historical facts in the film.
‘He violated the contract’
Coomi Kapoor, who wrote ‘The Emergency: A Personal History’, claims that he signed a contract with Manikarnika Films and Penguin Random House, allowing his book to adapt to a feature film. However, she believes that the agreement has been “clearly dissolved.” According to the agreement, filmmakers had the right to creatively customize the material. But on the legal advice of his daughter, two important conditions were added by Kapoor himself.
Kapoor said, “My daughter is a lawyer, so on her advice, I included two clauses. While the producers had complete artistic freedom to make a film, nothing should be changed that opposed the publicly available historical facts.”
He said, “The contract also said that the author’s name and book cannot be used for promotion or exploitation of film without pre -written consent. I was in Goa and did not see the film at that time, assuming that he would respect the contract. But they are still claiming that the film is based on the book.”

The film accused of using her name without permission
The journalist says that he was surprised to see that the title of the film – ‘Emergency’ – was very close to the name of his book. He believes that this was done with the aim of drawing attention. Kapoor said that focusing on Indira Gandhi was the original plan for the film to use only a specific chapter from her book. Instead, the film went far ahead, she claims, and includes “historical impurity”.
His legal notice states, “The Emergency was not removed until Mrs. Indira Gandhi lost the general election in March 1977.”
Kapoor also said that the filmmakers did not respond to the legal notices sent on 3 April. With no response to Kangana’s team or Netflix, she proceeded with a formal case.

To seek compensation for ‘damage’
Kapoor says the film has caused his serious iconic and professional loss. She is now asking for compensation what she says to emotional, financial and legal damage.
As mentioned by PTI, the legal notice reads, “If you fail to comply, our customer has reserved the right to initiate legal proceedings to search for appropriate measures for this egoistic violation of their rights.”
