European Union agrees to lift economic sanctions on Syria

The European Union has decided to lift its economic sanctions on Syria, the block’s foreign policy chief Kaza Kalas said on Tuesday.“Today, we decided to lift our economic sanctions on Syria,” Kalas said in a post on social media platform X.“We want to help Syrians a new, inclusive and peaceful Syrian reconstruction.”

To implement some European Union restrictions against Syria

Block had already discussed withdrawing sanctions in February, expressing a desire to support rapid economic reforms in Syria following widespread destruction of civil war of over a decade. However, not all European Union sanctions will be lifted.People and organizations with connections with Bashar Assad rule, as well as those responsible for cruel repression and human rights violations will also be subject to approval. The European Union will also maintain its export sanctions on arms and goods and technologies used for domestic suppression.President Donald Trump said last week that he would order to lift US sanctions against Syria.

Europe’s apprehensive support

Despite Tuesday’s announcement, Brussels still worry that the new Syrian government cannot go in the right direction. These apprehensions have been exposed by recent clashes between different groups. The new government was founded by terrorists of the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham Group, who shocked the world with an electric advance in December, which ended the rule of decades by the Assad family. The Group’s Islamist ideology has been a major cause of concern in Europe, but the growing instability in the broader region over the struggle has left very few space for manoun.“I think we have no choice,” Kalas said about the decision to lift the sanctions.Germany’s new Foreign Minister Johan Wadeful said, “We are giving a chance to the Syrian rule, but we expect an inclusive policy within the country including all the population and religious groups.”
