India has started a new era in Test cricket, named 25 -year -old Shubman Gill as captain for the upcoming five -match series against England. Gill replaced Rohit Sharma, who declared his retirement on 7 May from the longest format. He becomes India’s 37th Test captain and will lead the side in the first Test in Handingly, Leeds starting on June 20. Gill made his Test debut against Australia in Melbourne in 2020 and played 32 matches since then scored 1893 runs with five centuries and seven half -centuries. The squad has marked a generational change with several senior players. Along with Rohit, veteran batsman Virat Kohli and off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin have also retired from Test cricket. His absence indicates a new beginning for Indian cricket in the red-ball format.Rishabh Pant has been nominated as the vice-captain and first choice wicketkeeper.
