New Delhi: Purchase of wheat During the present Rabi marketing season (RMS) has crossed 296 lakh tonnes till Sunday, last year is 11% higher than the entire purchase of grains by the government agencies. This puts the government in a comfortable position for market intervention to meet the statutory food safety requirement and check the price increase.Since some wheat producing states will continue to procure by the end of June, the government is expecting the total purchase to more than 300 lakh tonnes. It is more interesting that Punjab and Haryana – Two major wheat producing states – have reported low purchase this year, while compared to the final RMS, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan have seen a huge increase in the government’s purchase.While Madhya Pradesh recorded the purchase of 77.7 lakh tonnes of wheat till Sunday, increased by 66% compared to last year, in Rajasthan, it increased to about 17.2 lakh tonnes. Sources said that low purchase in Punjab and Haryana is due to increase in private procurement. “This year due to a bumper crop, from government agencies to private players this year, there is sufficient wheat. Private players offering better prices are good for farmers,” said an official, “said an official.The Ministry of Agriculture has estimated 1,154 lakh wheat production for 2024-25. The Food Corporation of India PM supplies about 184 lakh tonnes of food grains to about 80 crore beneficiaries under the PM Garib Kalyan N Yojana and other social welfare schemes.After obtaining a record purchase of 433 lakh tonnes in the 2021-22 season, the purchase by the government agencies under MSP operations decreased by 188 million tonnes due to low output in the 2022-23 season. However, it increased by about 40% to 262 lakh tonnes in 2023-24.
