Athens: Greek Prime Minister Kirkos Mitsotkis said on Monday that his government was building two newly protected maritime areas in June, fulfilling the promise made at the United Nations Conference on the Oceans. The newly protected area in the Eonian Sea and in the Southern Cyclades in the Azian Sea “will be among the largest sea protected areas in the entire Mediterranean Sea”, he said in a video message in English. The Prime Minister said that the “very harmful exercise of trawling below” by commercial fishing boats would be banned within the new sea reserves and by 2030 in all the marinely protected areas of Greece, making it the first country in Europe, taking an important step in protection.Fishing is usually allowed in protected marine areas worldwide, even by travelers who scratch the seabed with a huge funnel -shaped mesh, for the destructive effects.Mitsotkis stated that he promised to “honor the unique maritime heritage” at the last month’s United Nations Fine Conference in Southern France “and to protect it for the coming generations”.“Today I am taking to that promise with the establishment of two new maritime national parks … because when we protect our ocean, we protect our future.” The Greece is located in the eastern Mediterranean Sea and has about 13,600 kilometers (8,450 mi) beaches and hundreds of islands. Greece, Brazil and Spain all used the United Nations Conference in the UN, to announce new protected sea reserves and to stay downward to protect sea wildlife. Mitsotacis stated that the size of the new Greek sea reserves “will enable us to achieve the target of protecting 30 percent of our regional water by 2030”. He said that the government will “work with local communities, local fishermen, scientists (and) global partners (two), who give examples to these parks whether it is possible”.In May, Athens banned bending downwards in the water of the Fournoi Korson Island series in the Aegean to protect the recently discovered coral rocks that are exceptionally rich in marine wildlife. Neighboring Türkiye, whose western coast is close to the Islands, responded to Monday’s announcement by criticizing such “unilateral action”.The Ministry of External Affairs in Ankara said, “International maritime law encourages cooperation among these seas coast states, including environmental issues.” It said that Türkiye was ready to cooperate with Greece and will soon announce its plans to protect the maritime areas. Both members of NATO, Greece and Türkiye have historical disputes over sea borders in the Aegean Sea. He signed an agreement in 2023, which was aimed at reducing stress.Mitsotakis said the British Natural History Broadcaster Sir David Etanboro’s new documentary “Ocean” had inspired Greece to accelerate efforts to protect life under waves. The “Ocean”, which introduces luxurious footage of undersis houses and marine life, emphasizes the importance of healthy sea and current widespread damage of wild species on the planet to deal with climate change. Mitsotkis stated that the “ocean” showed that the sea was “not just a beautiful view”. “This is life. Delicate. Powerful. And in danger.”
