‘He may not have done this for anyone else’: Trump claims that India agreed to leave the tariff on ‘nothing’.

US President Donald Trump on Tuesday claimed that India agreed to quit tariffs to “nothing” on American imports, claiming that the decision was made entirely because of them.“In India, as an example, one of the most tariffs in the world is. We are not going with him and they have already agreed to leave it, “Trump told reporters at the White House during a media conversation with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Karney at the White House.“They will not leave it anything. They have already agreed. They may not have done so for someone else, but me.”Trump, however, did not provide any details on areas or goods affected by the alleged agreement. However, India has not officially made any statement in this regard as trade talks are going on with the US.
A conditional proposal
Infamous sources told Bloomberg that India proposed zero-for-zero tariff arrangements on specific goods such as steel, auto parts and pharmaceuticals, but is based on import versions with a hat on imported and based on mutual mutuality. If the import agrees more than threshold, standard duties will be restored. The proposal was reportedly presented during a high-level trip to Washington last month, as the aim of both sides is to rapidly track a limited trade agreement before the 90-day suspension on Trump’s new mutual tariff.
Quality concerns and regulatory barriers
The US has also expressed concern about India’s Quality Control Order (QCO), which compulsory technical standards for products sold in the country. US officials argue that these rules have obstructed American exports and lack transparency.Indian authorities have indicated openness to review QCOs in areas such as medical equipment and chemicals. They have also proposed a mutual recognition agreement to streamlinse regulatory compliance for the two countries, although it is uncertain to include such provisions in the final deal.
