‘Her wallet is full’: PNB scam whistleblower Mehul Choksi after arrest in Belgium on India Ecordation

New Delhi: Punjab National Bank Scam Whistleblower Hariprasad SV on Monday doubted the possibility of fugitive businessman Mehul Choksi being extradited in India, cited Choksi’s reach for top legal support in Europe. His reflection came on the concerns of bringing him back to India after the 65 -year -old absconding Diamond Merchant was arrested on Saturday in Belgium on Saturday.
Speaking to ANI, Hariprasad recalled how Choksi had managed to avoid legal proceedings when he was first detained in Dominica. “Extradition is not an easy task. Choksi’s wallet is filled, and he will appoint the best lawyers in Europe to avoid this process such as what Vijay Mallya is doing. I don’t think it would be easy for India to bring him back, “he said.
“When he was caught in Antigua (Dominica) and other islands, he could manage to get out of it because he has a fleet of lawyers. But I want and hope that this time, the Government of India will succeed,” said Hariprasad.
He also reported that more than 100 franchises were allegedly cheated by Choksi, many of which had registered cases in various Indian cities. PNB Scam Whistleblower said, “Even I received his arrest warrant from Bangalore police, but nothing really happened because he was quite smart to get away from the clutches of the law.”
Exposing further challenges, he said, “The legal system in India is undoubtedly great, but the extradition process depends on the country with which we are working. This case is not easy, because it has so much money.”
Hariprasad had earlier raised red flags about the scam in a letter to the Prime Minister’s office on July 26, 2016, which warned of suspected entries in the balance sheet and potential large -scale fraud.
Meanwhile, sources confirmed that Choksi was arrested in Belgium on Saturday after local authorities verified their presence. Preparations are allegedly going on for his extradition in India.
However, Choksi is preparing for a legal battle. His defense team is expected to seek bail and challenge the extradition process. The legal team has cited their health status and other factors to oppose the request.
Choksi fled from India on 2 January 2018. He is desired by the CBI and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) with his nephew, Nirav Modi, with his nephew, with his nephews fraud worth about Rs 14,000 crore for his alleged role.
