Mumbai: In a step that can prove to be harmful to public health, homeopath will soon be able to write modern medicines in Maharashtra after completing a six -month course in pharmacology. What kind of drugs and diseases may include it, it is still unspecified.A notification to this effect was recently issued by the Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC), allowing homeopathic physicians to allow registration with the council to complete the certificate course in modern pharmacology (CCMP). MMC is working without an elected body of doctors since 2022.“We received a direction from the government and an approval from the law and judiciary department, which is about the case pending before the court. We will start registering them from July 15. Till then, we will study what kind of drugs they will be allowed to determine, “MMC Administrator Dr. Vinky Ragwani said. The controversial decision had sown its seed in 2014, when the state government worked for the acting of the Activhatractroch Practitioner Act and the Mahrasht Council for Maharashtra Homeopathic Acting.The Indian Medical Association (IMA) challenged the amendments, and the Bombay High Court issued a stay. From the end of last year, there were attempts to bypass this migration.In December 2024, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) directed chemists and wholesalers to “sell homeopathic registered doctors who have completed CCMP courses to sell allopathic medicines”.IMA Maharashtra President Dr. Santosh Kadam said, “FDA is a drug regulator, but it does not have the right to identify who can practice medicine.” That authority is only with MMC.
