The annual conference of the International Cricket Council in Singapore on Thursday kicked with an important election, in which Gurmurthy Palani (France), Anurag Bhatnagar (Hong Kong), and Gurdeep Claire (Canada) won important positions over the Committee of Chief Officers (CECs). All three-covered all three won from the region, marking a big innings under the global leadership of cricket.Palani and Bhatnagar led the pack with 28 votes, while Claire secured 21 votes. This committee plays an important role in developing cricket around the world and managing sports internationally. For Associate Cricket Heads, a location on the CEC is highly valuable and often serves as the passage of the more powerful ICC board.The election included a diverse group of candidates, including former Hong Kong head Tim Cutler, who represents Vanuatu, East-USA cricket administrator Shankar Renganathan from Sierra Leone, Stella Sial from Samoa and Sarah Gommersal from Jersey. Members of the last two committee, Rashpal Bajwa from Canada and Umair Butt of Denmark chose not to participate in this election.The outgoing member, Damodar, was known for his bold initiative, which included efforts to revive the Ephro-Asia Cup and his advocacy for more major events for collaborative nations. Another notable candidate was Renganathan, who attracted attention to his vocal criticism of the current challenges of USA cricket.
The voting process consisted of 40 associate members and five regional representatives from America, Asia, Europe, East Asia-Pacific and Africa. According to ICC rules, candidates either need to be an associate member representative or experience as ICC Director.The newly elected members will serve two years of terms and also participate in the Associate Members Committee, which oversees the government at the associate level. This election symbolizes the beginning of a new era for the ICC, now set to discuss several important issues during the conference, led by Chairman J Shah and new CEO Sanjog Gupta.
