New Delhi: The Center prepared an impeachment motion against Justice Yashwant Verma, Allahabad High Court in the upcoming monsoon session of Parliament, is expected to start in mid -July. Sources in the government confirmed the proposal in the upcoming session on Tuesday. The move follows the prosecution of the Supreme Court -appointed investigation panel appointed by the Supreme Court on the allegations of unaccounted cash discovered at its official residence in Delhi after the fire on March 14, 2025. Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju is ready to hold consultation with all political parties to maintain consensus for unprecedented proposals, which if passed, will mark the first impeachment of a High Court judge in India.Sources in the government said that before the impeachment motion, there is a process of creating a panel to investigate the allegations against the accused judge. However, that formality is not required as the Supreme Court has already completed the practice. Despite the Supreme Court recommendation to resign, he has motivated the government to start the impeachment process. Under the Constitution and Judges (Inquiry) Act, 1968 of India, an impeachment motion requires at least 100 Lok Sabha or 50 Rajya Sabha members support. After this, both houses should pass with a two-thirds majority. The eagerness to ensure the government, bilateral support has worked attractively with opposition parties including Congress, TMC and DMK to return the proposal to Minister Rijiju.The Allahabad High Court Bar Association has welcomed the move, emphasizing the need to maintain public belief in the judiciary. The case has debated judicial accountability and the balance of power between the judiciary and the executive. Vice President Jagdeep Dhikar emphasized the importance of the legal fixed process, saying, “Judicial freedom should not be accountable.”
