The Goods and Services Tax (GST) collection crossed a mark of Rs 2 lakh crore for the second consecutive month in May 2025. According to data released by the Finance Ministry, the gross GST collection in May was for Rs 2.01 lakh crore, which is 16.4% increase compared to the previous year.GDP increased by 13.7% to about Rs 1.50 lakh crore in May, while GST revenue increased by Rs 25.2% from Rs 51,266 crore.Gros Central GST is integrated for Rs 35,434 crore, state GST Rs 43,902 crore and integrated GST for about Rs 1.09 lakh crore due to the breakdown of the May collection. Additionally, the cess collection was Rs 12,879 crore.For comparison, the collection in May, 2024 was Rs 1,72,739 crore. During the month, the total refund declined by 4%. 27,210 crore rupees.The NET GST collection increased by 20.4% to about Rs 1.74 lakh crore as compared to the previous year.The GST collection reached a record lifetime of Rs 2.37 lakh crore in April, which according to government data shows a 12.6 percent increase compared to the previous year. In April, the figure exceeded the second largest revenue of Rs 2.10 lakh crore in April 2024, after the introduction of the indirect taxation structure on 1 July 2017. The GST revenue collected in March 2025 increased to Rs 1.96 lakh crore.The government’s budget estimates indicate an expected increase of 11% in GST income, the anticipated collection has reached Rs 11.78 lakh crore, including both central GST and compensation cess elements.KPMG said reacting to the numbers, Abhishek Jain, indirect tax head and partner, KPMG said, “This GST collection is encouraging to cross the mark of ₹ 2 lakh crore once again. While the spike of last month was expected with reconciliation at the end of the year, the continuity of this month with a strong underlying speed and a recovery with the development of more than 16 years-year-year and a recovery that is clearly capturing. ,Deloite India partner Ms. Mani said that a sufficient difference in GST collection growth in states requires a wide field-wise examination for each state.While the collection increases between 17%and 25%in major states including Maharashtra, West Bengal, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, other important states such as Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana showed an increase of up to 6%.States including Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab and Rajasthan demonstrated a medium growth of 10%.“Therefore, the average growth across the country is not equally reflected in states equally, which is probably due to regional or seasonal factors, which require a deep data -based analysis,” Mani said.
