One day when opener Vaibhav Suryavanshi was rejected for a golden duck, India U19 captain Ayush Mahetre produced a brilliant retaliation, scoring a sensational century in the second youth test against England U19 at the county ground in Chemsford. Chasing a rigorous target of 355 on day 4, Matre led the front, confirming his growing stature as one of India’s most promising young batsmen. The 18 -year -old, who celebrated his birthday a week earlier on 16 July, enjoyed a notable form in this series. After marking his birthday with his comrades at Lord’s, Matre brought the ceremony to the pitch with a commanding performance. Opening the innings along with Suryavanshi, Matre did not waste any time to make himself vocal, score independently and set a tone for India’s chase. He formed an important partnership with wicketkeeper-boss Abhisian Kundu, who played a valuable role in a half century. Mhatre ran in his century in just 64 balls, showing his fearless stroke and showing positive intentions. His final score of 126 was overcome by just 80 delivery before trying to sweep the slog with the fourth ball of the 27th over from England’s Albert. His run tally saw 13 boundaries and 6 sixes. Matre’s stability in the series has been a standout. In the first young test at Bekenham, he scored a well 102 off 115 balls in the first innings and followed it with a sharp 32 in the second. He continued that speed with 90 delivery in the first innings of the Chelmsford Test with a fluent 80.
