Ind vs Eng: ‘It was out of character’ – Ricky Ponting on Shubman Gill controversy. Cricket news

Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting has supported India captain Shubman Gill after his hot exchange with England openers during the third test at Lord’s. Gill involved Zak Croly and Ben Docket a day 3 days late in an on-field logic, when England took time to start their second innings. India had matched a total of 387 only in England’s first innings and expected to bowl two overs before the stumps, but were disappointed.
Reviewing the incident, Ponting told Sanjana Ganason that he was surprised by Gill’s aggression but understood the reason behind it. Ponting said, “It was slightly out of the character with whatever I have known from Shubman in the past.” Speaking on the ICC review, Ponting said, “I am sure everyone was watching it and I know you will know him quite well, not that it is not usually so.” He said, “This captain stands for his team, it is a captain who really wants to show that it is now his team and this is the way we are going to play the game, and also, I think, want to give back a little.” Ponting, who captained in England, said that the pressure to play there could be intense. “Britain can be a difficult place to play. The crowd, as much as they love their game, can be a hostile place to play anywhere in the world. “Media there, when you are in a large chain, when it is an Ashes series or when it is England and India, the media always feels that they are also right above your back.” He also compared Gill’s leadership approach to Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. “I think he is starting to seal his team. And did a lot like Virat, such ways. Rohit probably never externally aggressive, I think, especially for opposition players.”

Do you think the aggression of Shubman Gill was justified during the hot exchange at Lord’s?
“I know that he often gets aggressive with his colleagues and tries to bring the best of them. But I like to see that Shubman stood standing for what was right in the game last week.”England extended the five-match series 2–1 when India lost the third Test by 22 runs. With the fourth test starting on July 23 in Manchester, both sides will be desperate to win a significant win.
