This all-Indian final is a historical moment, outlining the growing influence of the country in global women chess.
Veteran Grandmaster (GM), 38-year-old Hampi, reached the finals after a tough-semi-final against Tingji Lei, China’s top seed Tingji Lei, won in Rapid Tybreak.
Hampi has been a notable year, including winning the World Women Rapid Championship and sharing the first place in the Women’s Grand Prix. His experience and flexibility were on his full performance in the semi -final win.
He faces 19-year-old international master Divya Deshmukh, who has given a sensational run in the tournament, defeating three top-ten seeds, including Jenner Zhu, D Harika and former world champions Zongai Tan.
After reaching the final, Deshmukh accepted the intensity of his matches, saying she was “worried”, but fought to make history.
The final is more than two days (July 26-27) in the classical format with a possible tiebreaker on 28 July. Time control follows standard filas rules, and in case of draws, will decide the rapid and blitz games winners.
Beyond the title, both players have already secured spots in the 2026 women’s candidates’ tournaments. The winner will receive $ 50,000 (Rs 41.6 lakh), while the runner-up will take the house $ 35,000 (Rs 29.1 lakh).
In the final, as two generations of Indian chess, results – who wins, will be a monumental win for the game in India.
