IWAI opens offices to develop inland water transport on J&K rivers in Srinagar

Srinagar: Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) on Tuesday established its new office in Srinagar to strengthen the inland water transport (IWT) area of J&K under the Ministry of Port, Shipping and Waterways. River navigation infrastructure will be developed in three national waterways in the central region-NW-26 (River Chenab); NW-49 (River Jhelum), and NW-84 (River Ravi).A government spokesperson said that J&K Govt and IWAI signed a Moo in this year in March this year, under which the authority works, including the installation of floating jetty at 10 locations in J&K, wherever required, the development of navigational fairways, regular hydrologist for navigator AIDS and regular hydrographic surveys.The spokesperson said, “EY has made several infrastructure intervention to develop waterways as a strong engine of development. With active steps such as IWT terminals and related infrastructure developing, IWAI is working towards using the immense capacity of rivers across the country,” said the spokesman said.In addition, other projects – such as developing water navigation infrastructure in pulses and vuller lakes in Kashmir are also under the purview of EY. Earlier, Ivi had proposed to develop a cruise hotel in the Wular lake, said by officials.The spokesperson said, “The partnership between the government of IVI and J&C is an important step that promises to promote eco-tourism in UT, stimulating the local economy.”
